Abstract Background: Applying standard growth curves to population-based samples requires assuming that genetic growth potential is constant across different strata. However, there is little empirical evidence for or against the plausibility of this assumption. We investigated this hypothesis by assessing the association between socioeconomic position at birth and a proxy of genetic growth potential in a population-based birth cohort in Brazil. Methods: The cohort initiated in 1982 and all hospitals in Pelotas (Brazil) were visited daily to identify the children born alive. Those children whose mothers live in the urban area were eligible to the study. The main variables were: genetic score (~700 genetic variants robustly associated with height), length at age 2 years, adult (30 years) height, and socioeconomic position at birth. Results: We initially confirmed that the genetic height score was positively associated with length and height in our cohort. Socioeconomic position at birth was positively associated in a dose-response manner with the genetic score [average difference of 0.18 (CI95%: 0.09; 0.27) standard deviation units comparing the top and bottom socioeconomic tertiles], length and height. Sensitivity analyses showed no indication that our findings were due to selection bias. Conclusions: Our results suggest that genetic growth potential may be different between socioeconomic subgroups of this population. Replication and better quantification of the magnitude of this potential difference are required to assess the impact of this (possible) violation of the constant genetic growth potential assumption.
